Personalization

X-3 Stiletto NASA airplane model. The X-3 twin-turbojet, the sole model constructed, was developed to evaluate the capabilities necessary for sustained supersonic flight at high altitudes. Additionally, it served to assess the application of novel materials like titanium and innovative construction methods.

On October 20, 1952, the X-3 took off for its maiden flight at Edwards AFB, California, and achieved supersonic flight in June 1953. In contrast to the mid-air launch method of the X-1, X-2, and X-15 from a carrier aircraft, the X-3 commenced flights from the ground. Challenges in engine development led to the installation of less powerful engines than initially intended, limiting the X-3 from fulfilling its intended performance goals. Nevertheless, insights from the X-3's trials significantly contributed to the advancement of the F-104, X-15, SR-71, and other high-speed aircraft.
