SE 5 RAF airplane model. The Scout Experimental 5 was followed by the launch of the improved S.E.5a model. In 1917, it proved to be superior to all its German rivals and became the top choice among pilots, surpassing even the popular Sopwith Camel. Its advanced features like ease of flight, high-altitude performance, and quieter engine gave pilots an edge in combat, with increased speed allowing for quick disengagement. Despite some criticism from Albert Ball, pilots like William Bishop and Edward Mannock successfully utilized the S.E.5a's capabilities, making it a feared aircraft. South African ace, Anthony Beauchamp Proctor, claimed a staggering 54 victories with the S.E.5a, the highest number for any pilot. Sadly, during World War I, 207 combat fatalities and 79 non-combat related pilot deaths were associated with the S.E.5 and S.E.5a.
