Personalization

Aer Lingus 747 airplane model.

The Boeing 747 was designed and constructed to meet the demand for larger aircraft capable of flying longer distances. It was groundbreaking at its launch, featuring a widebody design, dual decks, and a capacity significantly greater than any other commercial airliner of its time.

Boeing envisioned the 747 in the mid-1960s after it did not win a contract for a massive strategic transport aircraft from the US Air Force, which led to the creation of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Recognizing a market for a high capacity 'jumbo jet,' Boeing leveraged its design experience from the military project and introduced the new airliner on July 25, 1966. The inaugural flight took place on February 9, 1969, and the aircraft received its certification on December 30 of the same year.
