A-6 Intruder
Item Number: 1135Grumman A-6 Intruder airplane model. In March of 1965, the USS Independence first saw combat with the A-6A, the first of many Grumman Intruders. Throughout the fighting in Southeast Asia, different models of the Intruder played a crucial role. The A-6E, an upgraded version of the A-6A, made its debut on February 27, 1970. This advanced aircraft was equipped with two powerful Pratt & Whitney J52-P-8B turbojets, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 644 mph, a service ceiling of 42,400 ft, and a range of 1,011 miles. With an armament capability of 18,000 pounds, the A-6E proved to be a formidable fighter. By the end of production in 1990, over 660 A-6 variants had been built and delivered to the US Navy and Marine Corps, including 360 A-6E's (120 new and 240 converted from A
