F-4 Phantom VMFA-451 airplane model. The F-4 Phantom II, a twin-engine, all-weather fighter-bomber, was initially deployed by the U.S. Navy as an interceptor and later served as a ground-support bomber for the U.S. Marine Corps. Capable of executing three tactical air roles—air superiority, interdiction, and close air support—the Phantom saw action in Southeast Asia. McDonnell developed this iconic postwar fighter to address future operational requirements. The Phantom undertook every conventional military mission, including air superiority, close air support, interception, air defense suppression, long-range strike, fleet defense, attack, and reconnaissance.
