EF-111 Raven
Item Number: 381
EF-111 Raven Sparkvark airplane model. The development of the EF-111A Raven, also known as "Spark Varks," began in January 1975 when the Air Force contracted with Grumman Aerospace to modify two F-111As for electronic warfare purposes. With its high speed, long range, substantial payload, and reasonable cost, the F-111 was the perfect platform to protect allied tactical forces against enemy radar defenses. The EF-111A fulfilled this role by using a jamming orbit to cover friendly aircraft entering and leaving threat areas, or by utilizing its high-performance capabilities to directly support attacking forces. In the direct support mission, the Raven could fly in an escort position or enter a threat area to provide the best jamming position. The EF-111 also had advanced night terrain-following capabilities, making it a valuable asset in conflicts such as Desert Storm. In fact, an EF-111 was credited with one of the first kills of the conflict as it successfully caused a pursuing Iraqi Mirage to crash into the ground.
