Boeing 747 / Evergreen
Item Number: 178Evergreen Airlines 747 airplane model. The 747 significantly transformed airline transportation by being much larger than any previous aircraft, thereby reducing operating costs per seat and decreasing the expense of long-haul international flights.
Boeing developed the 747 in the mid-1960s after it did not win a contract from the US Air Force for a very large strategic transport, which led to the creation of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Recognizing a market for a high-capacity 'jumbo jet,' Boeing leveraged its design expertise from the USAF project and introduced the new airliner on July 25, 1966. The inaugural flight took place on February 9, 1969, and certification followed on December 30 of the same year.
