The Boeing 737 was designed as a short-range, small-capacity airliner to complement the Boeing jet family below the 727, 720, and 707. Introduced in February 1965, it was initially projected to seat 60 to 85 passengers. However, after discussions with the launch customer Lufthansa, the design was finalized for 100 seats. Its design characteristics featured two turbofans mounted under the wings and a 60% similarity in structure and systems to the 727, sharing the same fuselage cross-section.
