B-17 Flying Fortress airplane model. The B-17 was designed in the mid 1930s to accomplish the Air Corps mission of long-range strategic bombing. The problem was that War Department, and the Navy Department did not recognize that mission. Given the isolationist mood in the 1930s that precluded building offensive weapons, the B-17 had to be billed as a "defensive" weapon to defend the coastline.

This B-17 model is painted to reflect one that landed during the Pearl Harbor attack.

The only desktop model available an early Flying Fortress

You read that correctly. I've wanted a desktop model of an early "Sharkfin" Boeing B-17 for many years. No one ever produced one--that is until ScaleCraft finally did. And it's a beauty, too! It perfectly captures all the details of the early Fortresses. This is actually Boeing's B-17 Model D from 1940 (yes, it has the telltale engine cowl flaps installed). There is only one example of a Model D left in the world, and it is currently being painstakingly restored by the Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. So this is a rare bird in more ways than one. Which is precisely why you should get one for your office or family room before they're gone. While you're about it, be sure to watch Warner Bros 1943 WWII feature film "Air Force" (on TCM) to see the B-17D in action in the Pacific at the very beginning of the war.
