Wright Brothers airplane model. Aviation enthusiasts, and many people with only casual interest in aircraft, are aware that the Wright Flyer built by the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright has the distinction of being recognized officially as the world's first heavier-than-air craft to be flown in powered, manned, controlled, and sustained flight. This was achieved at Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. In the first of four flights made on that day, the Flyer, piloted by Orville, was airborne for 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet. In the fourth and final flight, piloted by Wilbur, it was airborne for 59 seconds and covered 852 feet. The age of aviation had begun!
