The Sikorsky S-76 helicopter model was developed in response to the growing demand for transport helicopters by offshore energy operations. Sikorsky conducted global market research to determine the needs of such operators and, in 1975, began developing the 14-seat commercial helicopter known as the Sikorsky S-76, later named Spirit. The inaugural flight of the first prototype took place on March 13, 1977. The enhanced S-76B model was equipped with Pratt & Whitney PT6B-36 turboshaft engines. An alternative to the S-76B, the S-76C, was powered by Turbomeca Arriel 1S1 turboshaft engines.
