Lockheed P-38 Richard Bong airplane model. The P-38 Lightning, first designed in 1937 as a high-altitude interceptor, made a striking debut in 1939 by flying coast to coast in just seven hours. Despite initial challenges due to its unique design, it was perfected for combat by late 1942 and played a crucial role in the North African campaign, earning the nickname "The Forked-Tail Devil" from the German Luftwaffe. With droppable fuel tanks for extended range, this versatile fighter excelled in escort missions, dive and level bombing, ground attacks, and reconnaissance, proving indispensable across multiple theaters of war. This model is painted to reflect the aircraft flown by Major Richard Bong, America's top ACE in World War II with 40 air victories.

Mahogany Wood. Scale: 1/32. Wingspan 19 1/2 inches, Length 14 1/4 inches.

Amazing P-38 Lightning

I received this model in December of 2025 and the P-38J Lightning airplane is my third Scalecraft acquisition. Every time I open a Scalecraft box I am amazed by the exquisite quality, craftsmanship and extraordinary detail. The P-38 is simply a phenomenal model in every way!
The second photo is from my late father’s book, “P-38 LIGHTNING AT WAR” by Joe Christy and Jeff Ethell. This historical photo of COL Richard Bong with “Marge” illustrates the detailed accuracy that is included with a Scalecraft model (although this photo may not make the published review due to copyright issues).
Even the box and packaging are very carefully engineered for safe shipping. My sincere appreciation and thanks to the Scalecraft team!
