Macchi Castoli floatplane racer airplane model. Mario Castoldi's design masterpiece, the Macchi M.C. 72, revolutionized seaplanes with its powerful 2,850 hp Fiat A. S. 6 24-cylinder double V-12 piston engine. The unique co-axial shaft and counter-rotating propellers eliminated torque issues and propelled the plane to an unrivaled world speed record of 440.683 mph on October 23, 1934. Today, the M.C. 72 remains the fastest piston-engined float plane in history.
