Lockheed L-10 Electra used by Amelia Earhart airplane model. The prototype for this 10-passenger all metal plane was first flown on February 23, 1934, and entered service during 1934, initially with Northwest Airlines. By the late 1930s it was being used by eight American operators. The Electra L-10-E is probably best known as the plane that Amelia Earhart disappeared in. Use of the Electra by small civil operators continued after World War II, as it was cheap to buy and operate, but few remained in service after the late 1960s. The Electra is probably best known as the aircraft that Amelia Earhart was flying when she disappeared while attempting to make a solo trans-pacific record flight.
