Douglas C-133 Cargomaster airplane model. The C-133 was a four-engine, turboprop transport that surpassed earlier Douglas military cargo airplanes in size and speed. Remarkably, the Cargomaster entered production without a prototype and featured a distinctive circular fuselage with wings mounted on top.

Capable of flying the equivalent of 22 loaded railroad boxcars nonstop from Los Angeles to New York at approximately 5 cents per ton per mile, the C-133 transported fully assembled tanks and Douglas-built Thor intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The final Cargomasters were built and delivered by Douglas in 1961. NASA utilized the Cargomasters for drop-testing early space capsules and transporting various space products. In total, Douglas constructed 50 Cargomasters; however, following the C-133, the company did not produce military-specific transports for another decade.
