Lockheed C-141 Starlifter airplane model. The StarLifter began operations with MAC in April, 1965, boasting a spacious cabin that could accommodate up to 154 troops, 123 fully-equipped paratroops, or 80 stretchers with seats for 16 walking casualties or attendants. During its missions in Vietnam, the aircraft's capability was impressively demonstrated. However, the need for inflight refueling became apparent and it was discovered that the C-141As could often carry more than their physical capacity. To address this issue, Lockheed was contracted to create a prototype conversion of a C-141A, which resulted in the lengthening of the fuselage by 23 ft 4 in and the addition of inflight refueling capability. The first flight of the C-141B prototype took place on March 24, 1977, and 270 surviving C-141As have since been converted, with the last one being delivered on June 29, 1982. The aircraft was powered by four
