Pan Am 747 airplane model. The 747 significantly transformed airline transportation. Much larger than its predecessors, the 747 reduced operating costs per seat, thereby decreasing the expense of long-haul international flights.

Boeing developed the 747 in the mid-1960s after it did not win a contract for a massive strategic transport aircraft from the US Air Force, which led to the creation of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Recognizing a market for a high capacity 'jumbo jet,' Boeing leveraged its design experience from the military project and introduced the new airliner on July 25, 1966. The inaugural flight took place on February 9, 1969, and certification followed on December 30 of the same year.
