A-6 Intruder airplane model. The Grumman A-6, known as the Intruders, were first used in combat in Vietnam in March 1965 while stationed on the USS Independence. Throughout the fighting in Southeast Asia, various models of the Intruders were heavily involved. In February 1970, Grumman debuted the A-6E, an advanced and upgraded version of the A-6A. This version was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney J52-P-8B turbojets, allowing for a maximum speed of 644 mph, a service ceiling of 42,400 ft, a range of 1,011 miles, and an armament capability of 18,000 pounds. The A-6E was the last variant to be produced, with a total of 660 aircraft delivered to the US Navy and Marine Corps. Out of those, 360 were A-6E's, with 120 being new and 240 being converted from A-6A's.
