Boeing 727 airplane model US Air. The first Model 727, adorned with the United Airlines insignia, took its inaugural flight on February 9, 1963, amidst estimates of a potential market for 300 or more aircraft. However, sales did not meet expectations initially. It wasn't until Boeing's management recognized the demand for a higher-capacity, short-range transport plane that they decided to develop a stretched version of the 727, known as the 727-200. This decision proved to be a game-changer for the aircraft as it went on to sell 1,831 units before production ended in the early 1980s. Equipped with three 14,500-lb. thrust Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A turbofans, the 727-200 was capable of reaching a maximum speed of 621 mph at 20,500 feet, a cruising speed of 570 mph at 24,700 feet, and a maximum range of 2,487 miles with maximum payload.
