American Airlines Boeing 747 airplane model. The 747 significantly transformed airline transport, being much larger than its predecessors and reducing operating costs per seat, thereby lowering the cost of long-haul international flights.

Boeing developed the 747 in the mid-1960s after not winning a contract for a large US Air Force transport, which led to the creation of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. Recognizing a market for a high-capacity 'jumbo jet,' Boeing leveraged its design experience from the military project and introduced the new airliner on July 25, 1966. The 747's maiden flight took place on February 9, 1969, and it received certification on December 30 of the same year.
