Boeing 314 Dixie Clipper airplane model. The Model 314 was a true marvel of its time, with a remarkable 3,500-mile range and its groundbreaking first scheduled trans-Atlantic flight on June 28, 1939. By the end of that year, Clippers were already routinely crossing the vast Pacific. Passengers on board the luxurious Clipper could enjoy stunning views from its large windows, as well as the convenience of dressing rooms, a dining salon that could be transformed into a lounge, and even a bridal suite. The Clipper's 74 seats could be converted into 40 bunks for those embarking on overnight journeys, while its galley served up gourmet meals that rivaled those of four-star hotels. Building on its success, Boeing launched 12 Model 314s between 1938 and 1941, but when World War II loomed, the Clipper was called into service to transport vital materials and personnel.
