The Avro Lancaster RAF heavy bomber, introduced in early 1942, evolved from the less effective Avro Manchester. Its four Merlin engines provided the power needed for demanding bombing missions, making it the most produced British bomber with 7,366 built during WWII. Equipped with up to ten Browning machine guns for defense, the Lancaster was versatile and formidable. It famously carried the massive 22,000-pound Grand Slam bomb and executed the iconic dam-busting raids using Barnes Wallis’s bouncing bombs. With around 156,000 sorties flown, it delivered over 600,000 tons of ordnance, proving its crucial role in the war effort.
