R3Y Tradewind

Convair R3Y Tradewind flying boat model. In 1945, the Navy enlisted Convair's help to create an advanced flying boat - the Model 117. Equipped with four powerful Allison T-40 turboprop engines and sleek, high wings, it boasted a single-step hull design and six-blade, contra-rotating props. With a jet thrust of 830 pounds (376 kg) and 5,100 shaft horsepower (3,806 kW) from each engine, the Tradewind was a sight to behold. Its fixed stabilizing floats were integrated into its thin, laminar-flow wing. After a few months delay due to engine trouble, the eagerly awaited "Tradewind" took its first flight in 1950. The Navy finally received their first Tradewind in 1954.
